Faktor Penyebab Anemia pada Anak Usia 6-59 Bulan di Rwanda: Analisis Data Survei Demografi dan Kesehatan

Anemia is indeed a significant risk factor for children’s health as it affects growth retardation and has severe short and prolonged effects that follow in morbidity and mortality. Notwithstanding such ways to tackle anemia, the prevalence remains high in Rwanda and poses a severe public health concern. The increasing prevalence of childhood anemia and the life-threatening consequences for millions of children in Rwanda are a major concern. Knowing the relevant associated factors with childhood anemia is essential to reduce the frequency and severity level. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence and to determine the factors associated with anemia in children under five years of age in Rwanda.
This study utilized a cross-sectional study design using the Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey 2019-20 data, we used ci-squared tests to find the association. Then, we utilized binary logistic regression to find the most influencing factors of anemia in Rwanda.
In our study, we have found that children who lived in rural areas are more (OR = 1.262, p = 0.034, 95% C.I = 0.917, 1.635) likely to experience anemia than children living in urban areas. Children with mothers who did not receive iron supplementation during pregnancy were more (OR = 1.192, p = 0.049, 95% C.I = 0.948, 1.459) likely to experience anemia. Children who are stunted are more likely to experience anemia than children who are not stunted (OR = 1.149, p = 0.013, C.I = 0.933, 1.414) and children who are underweight more likely to experience anemia than children who are not underweight (p=0.012 (OR = 1.383, p = 0.012, 95% C.I = 0.998, 1.577).
The variables such as place of residence, iron supplementation, stunting, and underweight were the most critical indicators for child anemia in Rwanda. In summary, our study result indicated the major socioeconomic and demographic factors associated with childhood anemia in Rwanda, which can help the policymaker to take quick decisions to reduce the severity level.
