The immune system plays an important role in protecting the body from various infections and diseases. Micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals have essential functions in supporting immune activity, both directly through their influence on immune cells and indirectly through their role in the synthesis and regulation of immune molecules. Micronutrient deficiencies have been shown to increase the body's susceptibility to infection and exacerbate immune responses.
This study aims to compile a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the relationship between micronutrient intake and immune system function. Using a systematic method based on PRISMA guidelines, data were collected from leading scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined to ensure the quality and relevance of the studies analyzed.
The results show that micronutrient deficiencies, particularly vitamins A, C, D, zinc, and selenium, are associated with decreased immune function. Meanwhile, micronutrient supplementation has been shown to improve immune response and reduce the risk of infection, especially in vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
This review emphasizes the importance of balanced micronutrient intake in supporting the immune system. Nutrition education and evidence-based nutritional intervention strategies are needed to improve the immune status of the community.
