Abstract

Mental health is a global issue that is getting more attention, especially in the context of the increasing rate of depression after the COVID-19 pandemic. Various studies show that depression is not only influenced by psychosocial and genetic factors, but also by nutritional factors.

This study aims to examine the relationship between nutritional intake and depressive disorders through a systematic review based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol. Literature from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases was strictly selected with certain inclusion criteria, resulting in 10 articles that were analyzed narratively. The study results show that the lack of important nutrients such as vitamin B complex, omega-3, zinc, magnesium, and folate correlates with an increased risk of depression.

In addition, the imbalance of the intestinal microbiota also contributes to mood disorders through the intestinal-brain communication axis. Some nutritional interventions, such as vitamin B and zinc supplementation, as well as a balanced diet such as the Mediterranean Diet, show positive results in reducing symptoms of depression. However, most of the studies are still observational, so the causal relationship cannot be determined for sure.

Further research with longitudinal and experimental design is needed to strengthen scientific evidence and formulate guidelines for effective nutritional interventions in the prevention and treatment of depression. This finding confirms the importance of an integrative approach between nutrition and mental health in an effort to improve the psychological well-being of the community.
